A note on the numbers
Different studies measure different parts of the picture.
“Domestic violence” can include violence by intimate partners and other family members. “Intimate partner violence” refers to violence by a current or former spouse, boyfriend, or girlfriend. Survey estimates, reports to police, and lifetime experiences are not interchangeable, so the date and definition attached to each figure matter.
This page brings together the most recent national figures available from the U.S. Department of Justice and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is for education and reference, not legal, clinical, or crisis guidance.
Context
Coercive control can be part of an abusive pattern.
Coercive control can include intimidation, isolation, monitoring, threats, and pressure that limits another person’s choices. The CDC’s survey reports it separately from physical violence, which is one reason a person’s experience may be serious even when it does not fit a single, simple description.
For people navigating separation, family court, co-parenting, or ongoing contact, practical support may be one piece of a larger plan. Read about high-conflict divorce coaching or explore the site’s trusted resources.
Methodology and sourcesHow this page is maintained
The figures above are drawn from primary federal sources. The Bureau of Justice Statistics figure uses the National Crime Victimization Survey, an annual survey of U.S. households. The CDC figures use its National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey and Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Each statistic identifies the relevant data year and publication date.
This reference page is reviewed about monthly, or earlier when a key source releases a newer national figure. Older figures remain labeled with their original data year so readers can distinguish current incident estimates from lifetime survey findings.
